Why Tetris is the Perfect Fall/Winter Game
When the weather drops, there's no better time to sit down to a relaxing Tetris marathon.
I remember the first time I ever played Tetris. It was back when I was in elementary school, and we’d recently been dismissed for winter break. I was torn over spending the next few weeks cramped indoors, but was also happy for the chance to catch up on books and video games. One game in particular I was eager to try… Tetris.
I’d recently procured a copy of Tetris for the Nintendo Game Boy, but with school, I hadn’t had the chance to actually sit down and play. With an abundance of time now on my hands, I booted up Tetris and discovered my love for the game. Ever since, I’ve always associated the fall and winter months with Tetris.
Growing up, it was my go-to game during holiday vacations from school. As an adult, it was a game that never failed to relax me during the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Particularly Christmas. This is because there’s a lot of distance between my family members, resulting in an inevitable trip to the post office.
Prior to downloading Tetris Blitz on my phone, I’d actually bring my old Game Boy along in my pocket. It was the perfect thing to keep me busy in the long post office line. The tradition is certainly the same today, although having a game like Tetris Blitz right on my phone definitely makes things easier.
Around four years back, I moved across the country from California to New Jersey. Because I moved in October, I didn’t have a lot of time to mentally prepare myself for winter weather. In California, winter weather consists of a bit of rain and bleary skies. On the East Coast, you can expect snowstorms and ice.
Learning how to adapt was rough, but fortunately I had Tetris to keep me sane. I quickly made a habit of curling up in some blankets and playing Tetris. Whenever the battery on my phone began to wane after hours of playing Tetris Blitz nonstop, I’d pull out my laptop and play online either on Tetris Friends or Tetris.com.

There’s something special about the routine of Tetris. No matter which game of Tetris you decide to play, you always know what to expect. It’s a game you can dive into with little effort, and one that will always surprise you when it comes time to take a break. I often found myself looking up and realizing I’d spent the entire day playing nothing but Tetris!
It’s for this reason, and many, many more, that Tetris has remained a holiday staple. Here on the East Coast, the chilly weather can feel as though it lasts forever. With a game like Tetris, however, time passes by in the blink of an eye. One minute you’re stressing over last-minute Christmas gifts, and the next you’re ringing in the New Year.
