Let's Get Crafty: How to Make Tetris Jell-O Treats

Learn how to make this tasty treat just in time for summer!

There are all sorts of tasty treats we love to enjoy during the summer. Whether it’s lemonade, popsicles, or barbeque, there are plenty of things to look forward to once summer rolls around. One food in particular that’s perfect during the summer is Jell-O snacks. Not only is it easy to make, but it’s also a great way to cool off while catching some rays.

If you walked through the grocery store aisles looking for Jell-O before, you know just how many colors and flavors are available. While many of us prefer one Jell-O flavor over the rest, there’s something awesome about a mixed platter of Jell-O. We can’t help but want to try each and every one! In doing so, we’re not only surprised by how good they all taste, we’re also impressed by how pretty the arrangements are.

These Jell-O platters recently got us thinking about the colorful Tetriminos in Tetris, and how many Jell-O flavors feature colors that match our favorite puzzle game. If we can make snacks like Tetris cookies, we figured we’d try our hand at creating Tetris Jell-O treats! If you’re looking to make some Tetris Jell-O, you’ll need a few basic supplies on hand, including:

  • 7 different colors of Jell-O (to match the official Tetris colors)
  • 7 different bowls to mix and cool your Jell-O
  • Tetris cookie cutters, or a plastic knife
  • A large pan to place your Jell-O Tetriminos
  • Plastic wrap
  • Space in your refrigerator to store your pan of Jell-O

The first thing you’ll notice after reading through the list of supplies is that it doesn’t take much to create Jell-O. All you need are the boxes of Jell-O, some water, a few bowls to mix your Jell-O, and a way to cut out the Tetrimino shapes. Other than that, having some free time and an extra pair of hands always helps.

If you have friends or family nearby, why not ask them to help you out? Should they accept, give them a few bowls full of water, a few boxes of Jell-O, and some spoons to stir with. From there, ask them to pour the contents of one box of Jell-O per bowl of water to create the color shown on the box.

For example, ask them to give you a bowl of red Jell-O, green Jell-O, and blue Jell-O. After they’re done, help them place the bowls in the refrigerator to cool. When it comes time to cutting out the shapes after the Jell-O is ready, if you have Tetris cookie cutters you can ask your loved ones for help.

Or, if you’re using a plastic knife, you can do the cutting yourself to prevent accidents. Using a clean surface like a plastic cutting board, gently remove one of your color Jell-O molds and cut out your Tetriminos.

To make things easier, you can assign one Tetrimino per color, rather than cutting all seven out of each color.

When we were making Tetris Jell-O, we cut the I-Tetrimino out of the blue Jell-O, the O-Tetrimino out of the yellow Jell-O, and the T-Tetrimino out of the purple Jell-O. We did this to try and match the official Tetris colors and make our Tetris Jell-O more accurate. However, you can get as creative as you want with your Tetris Jell-O. After all, you’re eventually going to eat it, right?

Once you’ve cut all of your Tetriminos out, place them on a large pan and wrap them with plastic wrap before placing the pan back into the refrigerator. If you want to make a fun game out of your Tetris Jell-O, try to find a white square or rectangular plate to act as your Tetris matrix. Then, take out your pan of finished Jell-O Tetriminos, and play a game of Jell-O Tetris.

When you clear a line, go ahead and eat your Tetriminos! It’s a fun way to not only enjoy a tasty treat, but also get some Tetris practice. If all of this Tetris talk has you itching to play a game of Tetris, why not enjoy a few rounds before heading to the store to grab some Jell-O?
