Tetris CEO Maya Rogers on Teaming With Red Bull for World Finals in Dubai, Expanding Brand for Next-Gen Consoles
Next month, Tetris concludes one of the most ambitious partnerships in the video game brand’s history with a massive competition event Dubai.
Following global qualifiers that took place across North America, Europe, Japan, and Brazil, the Red Bull Tetris World Finals will take place Dec. 13, featuring players from more than 55 countries, arena-style competition, and a 2,000-drone Tetris show lighting up the sky.
“The collaboration with Red Bull is the biggest Tetris Live event that we’ve done to date,” Tetris CEO Maya Rogers said on Variety’s “Strictly Business” podcast. “And we’ve had previous relationships with Red Bull where we did a game called ‘Tetris Mind Bender.’ And as a succession to that, Red Bull approached us and they wanted to do this exciting online competition. So it’s been a year long project. There is a global competition happening where players from around the world can compete on their mobile phone for their best scores.”
Rogers added: “Within this structure in Dubai called the Frame, which is a 400-foot-tall building or architectural piece, we’re going to be playing a 2,000-drone video game of Tetris. And so I’m so excited because the finalists will be flown to Dubai, and we get to see this in the skyscrapers of Dubai.”
CEO since 2014 and a Tetris employee for more than 17 years, Rogers grew up around the company, as he father, Henk Rogers, was responsible for landing the rights to “Tetris” in collaboration with creator Alexey Pajitnov.
“Tetris has always been the game that’s evergreen,” Rogers said. “It’s a game that brings people together, so doing things around esports and competition, Tetris is the perfect game. It doesn’t require language. It’s global. Anybody can play it, and it’s a safe game. There’s no violence. And we’re just so excited that an opportunity like this with Red Bull and others could open doors for really, the world coming together and competing in the friendship kind of way.”
